Feel Free to Keep Scrolling

I know this has been said a million times before, but I’m here today to say it again. If you don’t like something you see on social media, and if it in no way affects you or your life, FEEL FREE TO KEEP SCROLLING.

I understand it’s not always easy. I know that sometimes the urge to comment on someone else’s photos and posts is really, really strong. But you know what? You truly don’t have to comment. No one’s mind has ever – in the history of Facebook- been changed by a rude comment, unverified statistic, or some holier-than-thou scolding.

I’ll be the first to admit I have been sucked into some ridiculous debates on social media. I have been incredibly hurt by someone weaponizing social media. I have unfriended people and been unfriended by people. I have also learned that my commenting and debating with people behind keyboards is a huge waste of time. If I see you in person and a topic comes up, we can talk about it then. If you write something or post something I disagree with, I’m going to do my best to just scroll on by.

The great thing about social media is we can share our lives and ideas with a broad audience. The horrible thing about social media is we can share our lives and ideas with a broad audience. And that’s the rub.

Last night, someone made a comment on a photo of my daughter watching a speech. I thought the comment was uncalled-for. I deleted it and moved on with my night. The end. That’s the beauty of social media. You get to curate your own profiles. You can unfollow, block, and delete.

And you can also just keep on scrolling.
